Dag in dag uit
2008
Six different people from the same street take the bus to the city in the morning. Each one of them tries to survive this day by following their daily routine. At the end of the day, all attempts take a darker turn when one of them is struck by death. In ‘Day in Day out’, these six stories are subtly interwoven, creating a sense of solidarity and silent support despite them all being individuals.
“Although the film as a whole is well put together, the most beautiful aspect of ‘Day in Day out’ is that the director, through a subdued mise-en-scène, cinematography, and musical support, allows the visuals to speak for themselves and deliberately limits the dialogues to a minimum. The worries, minor irritations, and powerlessness that each individual character struggles with are made palpable in a short amount of time through strong atmospheric creation and subtle (silent) acting. Especially Monic Hendrickx, Eva van de Wijdeven, and Wim van der Gijn manage to evoke emotion and sympathy in a number of recognizable, poignant scenes. ‘Day in Day out’ seems to be a film where not much exciting happens, but it displays more emotions and feelings in the tight forty minutes than many feature-length films.”
